Jianbin Meng
Director of Economics and Environment, ILZSG, Portugal
Mr Meng’s presentation will examine the impact of Chinese government policies on lead battery and lead metal use. It highlights China's dominant role in global lead production and usage, detailing key policies that regulate waste battery recycling and reduce environmental risks, and the implications of these policies including overcapacity in the lead recycling sector and challenges for primary lead production. The presentation will also discuss the shift from lead-acid batteries (LABs) to lithium-ion batteries in various applications due to new safety standards/energy efficiency and the tendency to exclude LABs from certain applications. Regarding the future development of the LAB market, the presentation concludes, that despite stringent regulations and competition from alternative technologies, LABs remain relevant due to high replacement demand and limited supply of alternative materials. To sustain its relevance, the industry has to emphasise the need for technological innovation and better communication about LABs' benefits and risks to maintain its market position.
