I am excited about coming to the ELBC, not only to be able to attend in person, but because I get to do so as a representative of the Women in the Global Battery Industry, otherwise known as WGBI. If you don’t already know, WGBI launched in January as a global organization that serves to promote and develop the growth of women professionals in the battery industry and inspire the leaders of tomorrow. WGBI is spearheaded by a talented group of women who make up the steering committee: myself, Virginia Archibald of Surrette Battery, Ellen Maxey and Negin Salami of Clarios, Teresa Grocela and Angelika Mayman of Hollingsworth and Vose, Tammy Stankey of The Doe Run Company, and Pamela O’Brien and Priscilla Gill of the BCI.

As a former teacher at an all-girls’ Catholic school, I have been invested in furthering women’s careers for a long time, and find it a full circle moment that I am able to have the opportunity to represent this group in its first steps.

With the goals of networking, growth, education, and mentorship, in just a few short months, WGBI has grown to include over 175 members, both professional and academic. Of these members, 75 participated in our first webinar of the year, featuring a presentation from Nancy Martin, NRM Consulting on developing a career that is right for you. This was the first of a quarterly webinar series that will continue through this year. The next webinar will take place on July 12, 2022.

Our future meeting schedule is as follows:

  • July 12, 2022—(virtual webinar: Owning Your Own Career Path)
  • September 7, 2022 (ELBC – Lyon, France)
  • October 12, 2022 (Chicago, IL) – Speaker and Social Event
  • December 2022 (virtual date TBD)

There is also a private LinkedIn group for members to get to know each other better, and foster networking goals.

The success of the launch of WGBI has truly been a testament to the commitment of our female leaders in the industry. We couldn’t have done it without your support. We’re continually looking for dynamic women to participate in subcommittee work and help shape the future direction of the organization. If you or someone at your company is interested in getting involved, please visit the WGBI website or speak to us at the networking event held at ELBC on Wednesday 7 September.

I look forward to meeting you all in Lyon.
